Elizabeth Holzman Reads “The Flat Earth”

Last summer, I was lucky enough to see a short story I wrote performed at Sacramento Stories on Stage. This monthly event is just one more reason why Sacramento is a premier literary town and a wonderful place to be a reader and a writer.

My story “The Flat Earth” appears in the print edition of Night Train Journal released last March. The story opens on a scene at a ninth grade girl slumber party that is based almost word for word on something that happened to me when I was a kid. Someday you should try having one of your most painful childhood memories read aloud to you in front of a room full of people. In the hands of a good actor the mud of your experience can be formed into a beautiful thing separate from the art you made. It’s cool.

Editor and author Rusty Barnes does a fabulous job with Night Train Journal. Consider getting a copy here, if you like short stories.

If you’re ever in Sacramento on the last Friday night of the month, find Stories on Stage in town. Remember the joy of someone reading to you when you were small?  It’s that, only even better.

Tomorrow night, Pulitzer Prize winner Adam Johnson will appear at Sacramento Stories on Stage at Verge Center of the Arts, 625 S Street, Sacramento CA. Doors open at 7:00, with a suggested $5 donation.
